Hospital Procedures

Dental treatment for kids using general anesthesia in a hospital setting is sometimes indicated. A planned hospital general anesthesia visit is commonly referred to as hospital dentistry or hospital dental surgery. The most common reason children require such treatment is for advanced, severe, early childhood caries. In cases where decay is advanced, there is pain and infection, and a child is not able to cooperate with an office visit, then dental surgery with sedation may be advisable as a safe and effective alternative.

Hospital Procedures FAQs

For children that are very young, have high anxiety, need a lot of dental work, or have special needs, general anesthesia in a hospital setting may be recommended. Especially if your child needs to remain completely still or if there is a lot to fix, a hospital environment might be the safest and most efficient way to complete the dental procedures.

Typically there is your pediatric dentist, an assistant, and the hospital anesthesiologist. The anesthesiologist focuses on monitoring your child during the entire procedure while the pediatric dentist works with the assistant to complete the work needed for your child. All three work in tandem for the health and safety of your child to make the experience efficient and comfortable.
